(1853-1890) Vincent van Gogh committed suicide in 1890 at the age of 37 after a life tortured by mental illness. Reading through this series of articles, you may recognize van Gogh's illness as bipolar disorder, a psychiatric illness that plagues a number of highly creative people. Although bipolar disorder is treatable now, many people believe that individual suffering feeds creative art even though that suffering eventually consumes the individual. In Vincent's own words, "If I could have worked without this accursed disease, what things I might have done."
